Consolor wheelAIR partnership imageSeating specialist Consolor has partnered with healthcare start-up wheelAIR to create a new backrest which aims to offer users postural support and keep them cool at the same time.

The two companies combined their expertise to deliver the wheelAIR’s cooling airflow properties and Consolor’s close contouring and postural correction of its carved foam and moulded seating systems to create a beneficial product for individuals.

Originally designed to fit onto the back of lightweight wheelchairs, wheelAIR’s overall goal was to have the fan technology in the cushion available in other seating systems too, with the right partner.

Its partnership with Consolor now means that users who need the support of a tailor-made seating system can also benefit from the cooling feature of the wheelAIR.

Kieran Cheer, Managing Director of Consolor, said: “By recessing the vents of the wheelAIR system into the carved foam backrest the custom contours are maintained and the user benefits from the cooling airflow throughout the height of the backrest.”

Overheating is a little-known but common problem for wheelchair users and those who require modular and custom contoured seating are often the most at risk of the associated problems.

The issue can be very uncomfortable for users and can lead to serious health aliments such as flare ups and open wounds.

Corien Staels, Managing Director of wheelAIR, commented: “To collaborate with Consolor and now be able to cool people who use custom seats is a huge milestone for us.

“We know that those who use custom seats often struggle the most with heat and moisture build up, so we are excited by how this could transform their lives.”
