The Disabled Living Foundation (DLF) has launched a new online version of its popular AskSARA self-assessment tool, which boasts a fresh, new look that is easier to use, less cluttered and more engaging.

After months of intensive development, the new AskSARA (‘self-assessment, rapid access’) service is now mobile-responsive, accessible and can be used on a variety of mobile devices. Plus, the tool now has a more modern look.

The free-to-use, impartial and guided advice tool produces impartial advice, written by OTs, about suitable aids and adaptations for over ninety topics of daily living for older and disabled people. Topics on AskSARA include: bathing and toileting, getting dress, communicating, mobility, hearing, stairs, medication management and living arrangements.

Users choose a topic, answer some questions and view a report of advice tailored to their loved one’s needs.

According to the DLF, AskSARA is the first of a series of online services to draw in information and advice live from DLF’s central database using API technology.

“The new platform also includes the wide range of licensed custom versions UK-wide which will be migrating over the coming weeks as well as offering DLF the opportunity to work with new organisations that can incorporate AskSARA into their own applications and websites,” says the DLF.

In June 2019, the DLF wrote an article for AT Today about who is using the AskSARA prevention tool and why. According to its findings, the most popular topic areas for users of the online service are: bathing and toileting, eating and drinking, preparing food, and opening tins, jars, packages and bottles.

The organisation also recently announced that its popular ‘Trusted Assessor: Assessing for Minor Adaptations’ course is now available online as it has paused all face-to-face training in line with the UK Government’s social distancing guidelines.
