After an incredible year of progress and on-track success, Dorset Orthopaedic ambassador Billy Monger was presented with the Helen Rollason Award at the BBC Sports Personality of the Year ceremony in Birmingham on the 16th of December.

The Helen Rollason BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award is given to individuals for “outstanding achievement in the face of adversity.”

This year, Billy Monger won the Helen Rollason Award at the BBC Sport Personality of the Year Award ceremony and received his award from Formula 1 champion Lewis Hamilton.

On stage with Billy at the Genting Arena, was Dorset Orthopaedic’s clinical services director — and one of Billy’s treating prosthetists — Matt Hughes, who was among a group of people credited with helping Billy get back to racing and to winning trophies in the BRDC Formula 3 Championship.

Billy has been a patient at Dorset Orthopaedic for around 12 months, after the horror crash at Donington Park which resulted in the loss of both his legs, one above knee and one below.

As well as his day-to-day prosthetics, Dorset Orthopaedic also made for him a bespoke prosthetic socket on his below knee side with which he can apply the brake on his Carlin racing car. The prosthetic absorbs braking forces, reducing pressure and potential pain on Billy’s residual limb.

Matt said: “It was a huge thrill and a great honour to be able to join Billy on stage as received his award from Formula 1 champion Lewis Hamilton. We’re delighted to have helped him on his journey so far with his bespoke driving prosthesis, and look forward to working together more in future.”

Dorset Orthopaedic is an independent provider of prosthetic, orthotic, silicone and rehabilitation services. Established in 1989, Dorset Orthopaedic — which has clinics in Hampshire and the Midlands — operates under its ethos of “Strive for Better” and aims to help clients live life without limits.
