Healthcare professionals invited to OT-led CPD assisted bathing education at The OT Show
Working in conjunction with Abacus Specialist Bathroom Solutions, respected OTs Kate Sheehan and Adam Ferry will be delivering brand new CPD-accredited education regarding assisted bathing at The OT Show in November.
Kate and Adam are highly experienced occupational therapists (OTs) from The OT Service who lead the nationwide Abacus CPD training programme and ‘Lunch and Learn’ bathing workshops.
With over 30 years’ clinical practice, Kate Sheehan is one of the UK’s most respected independent OTs. She has a wealth of knowledge and expertise in client assessment, bathroom accessibility and housing design.
Adam Ferry qualified as an OT in 2007 and developed his skills within hospital emergency care. Adam currently manages OT services in three community rehabilitation units and one acute hospital. Over recent years, Adam has established a national profile within the private sector, organising the CPD programme for The OT Show and working with manufacturers such as Abacus Specialist Bathroom Solutions.
Seminar 1: Bathing and Sleep – joining the dots

Synopsis: Bathing assessments often become focused on the physical transfer of getting in and out of the bath. This session considers the occupation of bathing with a particular focus on how bathing can support sleep and positive routines. It will discuss the impact on children and their parents as well as adults and their carers.
Learning outcomes:
- Delegates will reflect on bathing as a meaningful occupation
- Greater appreciation of the link between bathing and sleep
- Consider impact of a positive bedtime routine on clients and their carers
- Develop greater understanding of equipment available to support bathing as a meaningful occupation
Seminar 2: Posture and Bathing – are you thinking straight?

Synopsis: Posture and its assessment are something typically associated with seating and sleeping but will the same problems, and solutions, not also apply to bathing? This session focuses on the issues of bathing posture with facilitated discussion around how safe and effective bathing can be supported for those clients with postural needs.
Learning outcomes:
- Develop understanding of the issues with posture when bathing
- Increased knowledge of equipment that enables clients with postural needs to bathe
- Reflection on bathing as a meaningful occupation
Seminar 3: Using bathing to support family roles

Speaker: Adam Ferry, Occupational Therapist, The OT Service
Synopsis: Bathing as part of a daily or bedtime routine for families with young children is generally considered to be the norm. This presentation considers the theory behind the use of bathing to support development through the use of play whilst reinforcing both parenting, carer and children’s roles.
Learning outcomes:
- Consider current legislation that supports bathing and access to play
- Reflect on our own experiences of bath time either as a child or with our children to consider its impact on our own development
- Develop an understanding of current barriers to bathing and how they can be broken
- Use role and developmental theory to underpin the therapists’ evidence base
