Dementia Champions Right at Home

“Many agencies claim to offer specialist dementia care services, but we believe that Dementia DELAY is the first service of its kind in the UK.”

Leading quality homecare network, Right at Home UK is preparing to roll out its revolutionary new ‘Dementia DELAY’ programme following a successful trial period. The announcement coincides with Dementia Awareness Week (17th to 23rd May) and will see the Dementia DELAY service, which it trialled in Sutton and Farnham, rolled out across the UK over the coming months.

Dementia DELAY is a revolutionary new service that Right at Home has developed in conjunction with Mary Jordan, renowned author of ‘The essential guide to avoiding dementia: understanding the risks’.

Right At Home has developed the Dementia DELAY Programme to help people diagnosed with early or mid-stage dementia to live well. Based on leading expertise, the latest research and the first-hand experience of its dedicated CareGivers, this programme will allow loved ones to stay happy and independent in their own home.

Right at Home will offer Dementia DELAY alongside its core homecare services. The programme uses quality homecare support to slow the progression of dementia symptoms and is based around five core pillars:

Dementia DELAY 5 Pillars:

  • Diet
  • Engaging with others
  • Learning & mental stimulation
  • Avoiding stress
  • Your body & exercise

Alistair Shanks, who heads up Right at Home Guildford & Farnham and helped to develop the programmes, said: “Many agencies claim to offer specialist dementia care services, but we believe that Dementia DELAY is the first service of its kind in the UK.

“We’ve worked extensively, with numerous experts, over the last 12 months to develop a programme that will give our clients’ high level and tailored care to delay the early onset of dementia.”

In addition to the announcement of the Dementia DELAY roll out across its network of homecare providers, Right at Home has been working in partnership with Affinity Training to develop on a bespoke advanced training course in dementia care. The training will link to the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF) and will enable Right at Home to further promote safe and independent living at home for people who have dementia.

Right at Home UK managing director, Ken Deary said: “The launch of our bespoke Dementia DELAY programme reinforces the fact that we are committed to delivering the very best service to our clients. Over 60% of our clients live with dementia and this new service will go a step further in ensuring that they, and their families, receive the outstanding support needed.

“Our team of quality CareGivers allow patients to retain their independence by staying in the comfort of their own home with either regular visits throughout the day, or through a managed live-in service. Hundreds of dementia sufferers will now benefit from the Right at Home Dementia DELAY service.”

Right at Home has a number of employees across the UK that have also been trained by the Alzheimer’s Society to promote a better understanding of dementia to people in their local communities. ‘Dementia Champions’ who deliver the training are creating a growing network for ‘Dementia Friends’, which now stands at 1 million across the UK.
