Mobility manufacturer Rehasense UK has unveiled its Power Assisted Wheelchair Systems (PAWS), which have been designed to provide extra power to a standard wheelchair and give users increased independence and the ability to travel further afield.

According to the manufacturer, the new wheelchair power add-on range will enable users with reduced mobility to access previously “impassable” terrains like sand, gravel and tree roots.

There are three models in the PAWS range – the City, Cruiser and Tourer. Each model is available with automatic or manual clamp and lift systems.

Depending on the terrain being travelled, PAWS has a range of up to 25 miles and can be charged from empty in five hours. Standard features include: forward/reverse mode; traction control for when setting off on a slippery surface or slope; cruise control to remove the need to permanently hold the throttle; and Walk Mode, which allows the user to set the speed at 2.5 mph. PAWS requires no frame alteration or additional add-ons to the wheelchair.

The entry level City is available with a 12-inch or 14-inch wheel and has been designed mainly for use around town. Rehansese UK says the 12-inch wheel is ideal for smooth tarmac roads while the larger 14-inch wheel can handle slightly more uneven surfaces. The City can also be used indoors thanks to its turning circle of just one metre.

For wheelchair users looking to venture off standard road surfaces and onto more uneven terrain such as a forest trail, the Cruiser is ideal. With a larger 16-inch wheel, the Cruiser offers a smooth comfortable ride.

Finally, the “top of the range” Tourer can take wheelchair users to terrains that would normally be inaccessible. With a 20-inch wheel, 4-inch tyres and a longer wheelbase for increased clearance and manoeuvrability, the Tourer is equally at home on tarmac or in an off-road environment. This model can easily overcome sand, gravel and obstacles such as tree roots and very uneven ground, which would otherwise be impassable in a wheelchair.

Lee French, Managing Director of Rehasense UK, commented: “We are delighted to be launching the PAWS range in the UK.  PAWS is the only wheelchair power add-on system available in the UK to offer a fully automatic clamp and lift system and is a great addition to our ever-growing product portfolio.”

PAWS will be showcased at Naidex on 15th-16th September 2021 on stand H10.
