Aberdeenshire Council’s plans to invest more than £150million in the delivery of affordable housing over the next five years have been published, with new homes set to support the needs of elderly and disabled people.

In the next five years, 2,354 homes could be built across Aberdeenshire, with around 590 suitable for households with particular needs and 73 fully accessible for wheelchair users.

Aberdeenshire Council Communities Committee Vice-Chair Cllr Iris Walker said: “The geographical challenges we face in the delivery of affordable housing has been recognised and we remain committed to prioritising opportunities in the areas of most need.

“We are also working to increase the provision of accommodation for those with particular needs to ensure that properties are equipped for as broad a range of people as possible.”

Work is currently underway to deliver the new plan.

The decision to incorporate 73 wheelchair accessible homes into the council’s plans echoes the sentiment from a Centre for Ageing Better report in February 2019. The report warned the UK was on the verge of an “accessible housing crisis”, with the charity crying out for a radical housing policy overhaul.
