Third annual Catastrophic Injury Conference provides valuable information to case managers

Dorset Orthopaedic recently held its third annual Case Manager Conference, ‘Strive for Better. Catastrophic Injury Conference,’ where 100 guests received valuable insights into the crucial role of surgery, prosthetics and rehabilitation from industry experts.

Taking place in Farnborough, Hampshire, the conference began with an insight into changing patient behaviours from Dorset Orthopaedic’s Beth Langley, a physiotherapist at its Midlands Clinic.

The talk was followed by Mary Tebb, a physiotherapist at the company’s Southern Clinic, discussing outcome measures and their importance in evaluating the progress made by patients during their rehabilitation.

Attendees also heard from renowned plastic surgeon Alex Crick, who provided an overview of the importance of good revisional surgery and its importance in successful rehabilitation.

In addition, delegates also received information from Dorset Orthopaedic’s Kevin Shaw and Gillian Burrage on the decision-making processes of prosthetists when prescribing lower limb prostheses, as well as the story of Osseointegration so far with clients in the UK from Matthew Hughes.

Specialists from other orthopaedic manufacturers were also in attendance to give valuable talks to the audience of healthcare professionals, including Jóna Sigurdardottir from Ossur and her demonstrator patient Gummi who introduced the first mind-controlled bionic lower limb.

With the latter part of the conference focused on upper limb solutions, delegates saw talks from Jay Burkholder from Mobius Bionics, demonstrating the capabilities of the new Luke Arm, as well as Michael Auer from Ottobock Vienna, presenting the advancements in pattern recognition for upper limb prostheses combined with cosmetic solutions available for patients.

Receiving positive feedback from attendees, Dorset Orthopaedic says the third annual conference was the biggest to date and was valued by those who attended.

Sandwiched between talks throughout the day were engaging real-life stories from seven of the company’s patients, including Paralympian Dave Henson who closed the conference with a run through of ‘Big Dave Henson’s Recipe for Success’ which resonated with many in the audience.
