Modern ‘bike-style’ mobility scooter launches to tackle stigmas around mobility aid use
Sunrise Medical, a global specialist in assistive mobility solutions, has launched a new, stylish mobility scooter that is designed to address stigmas and misconceptions surrounding mobility scooter use.
The Sterling S800 by Scoozy is a modern mobility scooter with a stylish ‘bike-style’ look and feel that Sunrise Medical believes will “usher in a new era for mobility aids”.
Designed for users looking to be more active, the S800 by Scoozy features four large 18-inch wheels, as well as an advanced suspension system, providing a smooth ride on any terrain. This includes dismounting a kerb or venturing on a country tail.
Its top speed of just over 11mph means it can keep up with bicycles in both urban and rural settings, which helps foster independence. A 70Ah lithium battery provides up to 31 miles in range, enabling users to go on longer adventures.
The S800 by Scoozy’s eye-catching bicycle-style handlebar includes intuitive controls, allowing users to navigate their surroundings with ease. A thumb throttle and hand-operated brakes, including cruise control, also reduce strain on hands and arms while providing complete control.
An LCD display, USB charging, and NFC locking have been built into the S800 by Scoozy to offer a pleasant driving experience. The backrest comes with a cushion seat designed to support users, alongside an adaptive suspension system and shock absorbers to make journeys smooth, whether traversing rocks on the beach or undulating city streets.
Lee Ratican, National Sales Manager at Sunrise Medical, said: “The Sterling S800 by Scoozy is a real first of its kind, that we at Sunrise Medical believe will change the future of mobility scooters.
“The S800 by Scoozy’s command of both rural and urban landscapes makes it a fantastic piece of kit, and its stylish, innovative design encapsulates this.
“Because the S800 by Scoozy is so versatile, it can help people both with specific clinical needs, as well as those suffering from reduced mobility, meaning it meets the demands of a large target market.
“We have also focused on phasing out traditional stigmas and misconceptions surrounding mobility scooter use – which is why the product looks really different from what people traditionally expect from a mobility scooter.
“We have received great results from initial user and retailer feedback; it was a definite hit at Naidex too, with some incredible feedback from the public on its look and feel. We’re looking forward to seeing it on our UK roads and trails very soon!”
The Sterling S800 by Scoozy is now available throughout the UK via authorised retailers.
The Wheelchair Alliance is calling on the UK Government to amend the “ridiculous” ‘not in a class’ classification in its guidance, which would require disabled children to have driving licences and insurance for their powered wheelchairs and mobility scooters.
