Medical device manufacturer Thuasne has announced that a “state-of-the-art” smart orthotic solution, called Agilik, is now available in the UK.

The orthosis is designed to enhance mobility and stability for children and adults with neuromuscular issues in the lower limb. This powered mobility device provides resistance and assistance to enhance muscle and assist knee flexion and extension, which improves posture, step length, endurance, and walking speed for patients.

The integration of this microprocessor-controlled system into a custom-made knee ankle foot orthosis (KAFO) makes it a non-invasive mobility solution.

Thusane describes Agilik as a “true breakthrough”. The assistive technology helps users improve stance phase stability on flat ground, slopes, and stairs and enhances swing phase clearance.

“The evolution from passive to assistive devices represents a necessary step in improving patient mobility,” explained Rosa Fojut, a certified prosthetist orthotist at Thuasne.

“This technology is not just an improvement, but a fundamental shift in how we think about orthotic solutions for mobility challenges.”

Agilik is designed to adapt to each user’s unique needs. Its parameters are customised and periodically updated to accommodate growth and gait changes. Users can seamlessly switch between two custom configurations set by their clinicians, such as resistance training and full support for extended walking.

Furthermore, Agilik offers long-term adaptability, as it can be easily removed from its current KAFO and reinstalled onto a new, larger one. With these features, the smart orthotic solution enhances biomechanics, increases therapy effectiveness, and reduces long-term complications for patients.

Developed by Bionic Power, Agilik was previously only available in the US. Thusane is the exclusive distributor of Bionic Power products, including the Agilik, in the UK.
