Innovative bariatric bed granted patent in the UK and Europe for improved patient care

Benmor Medical has been granted a patent for its innovative Aurum+ Bariatric Bed with stowable safety rails, entitled: ‘Barrier for a Bed’, in the UK and Europe.

The new patent for the bed’s safety rails provides increased safety for bariatric patients and improves the care delivered by healthcare professionals.

Designed specifically with size, strength and practicality in mind, key features of the Aurum+ bed – such as width adjustment, integrated weighing scales and patented adjustable safety rails – provide a safe environment within which to improve the moving and handling of larger patients up to 440kg.

Due to the complexity of bariatric patients, there is a requirement to frequently move patients in and out of bed and administer care to a patient. Therefore, it is desirable for bariatric beds to have movable safety rails so that a patient can either exit the bed or a healthcare professional can gain access to the patient, says Benmor Medical.

The new patent features on the Aurum+ Bariatric Bed range allow healthcare professionals to store the stowable safety rails within the bed frame. When required, the safety rails are easily pulled from the mattress platform, rotated 90⁰ upward and locked into position.

To lower the rails, the process is reversed.

These safety rails allow the width of the bed to be increased/decreased, with the barrier rail elements moveable between upright or underbed stowed configurations. This allows patients to exit the bed safely as well as enables healthcare professionals to easily access the patient while they are in the bed.

The Intellectual Property Office granted patent no. EP3315107 on the Aurum+ Bariatric Bed.

This decision adds to Benmor Medical’s patent portfolio, joining the company’s existing patent for the features on its innovative Deprimo Floor Level Bed.

According to the company, the patent marks an important milestone in Benmor Medical’s history and the continuing improvements the company makes to its medical equipment.
