Global technology giant Microsoft is showcasing the latest in accessible products, features and services at an annual event, as well as highlighting the importance of co-designing technologies with disabled people.

Microsoft kicked off its 12th Ability Summit on 10 May 2022, which is a free, community event that brings together people with disabilities and industry professionals to build the future of disability inclusion and accessibility.

The 2022 Microsoft Ability Summit will feature keynotes from Microsoft executives, accessibility, industry and disability community experts; expert panels featuring exciting projects and innovations, and debates on hot topics impacting the disability community; and new inclusive products and accessibility initiatives.

One such initiative is a new and expanded Inclusive Tech Lab. This lab is designed to display what is possible when disabled people are intentionally and proactively included in the product-making process. The new facility will include a showcase of Microsoft’s accessible hardware and software, and act as a space where Microsoft and disability communities can ideate and evaluate product design and direction.

Additionally, the summit will unveil new Microsoft adaptive accessories.

The Microsoft Adaptive Mouse, Microsoft Adaptive Tail and Thumb Support, Microsoft Adaptive Hub and Microsoft Adaptive Button have been designed in partnership with the disability community to empower people who may have difficulty using a traditional mouse and keyboard. The new Microsoft adaptive accessories empower users to configure, 3D print, and customise their own mouse, keyboard inputs, and shortcuts in ways that work best for their specific needs.

A comprehensive set of built-in accessibility and learning tools on Microsoft Edge, including Automatic Image Descriptions, Immersive Reader, Read Aloud, and Editor will also be exhibited at the Ability Summit 2022. Similarly, Windows 11 accessibility features including Focus, Voice Access, Live Captions and Narrator natural voices will be demonstrated at the free event.
