Lumin-i is a newly-launched, pioneering eye tracker for augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) that is effective and reliable both indoors and outdoors.

Developed by assistive technology specialist Smartbox in coordination with eye-tracking solutions developer Smart Eye technology, key features of the powerful eye tracker include responsive, accurate performance and a large track box that tolerates a wide range of head movements and positions.

Lumin-i also offers a unique anti-reflection mode to help users who wear corrective glasses with coatings or filters.

A bespoke built-in camera unit has been created for Lumin-i, turning Smartbox’s Grid Pad 12 and Grid Pad 15 communication aids for AAC users into robust and dedicated eye gaze devices.

Grid Pad enables users with speech or motor difficulties to communicate via a computer interface, so they can actively participate in society and remain independent. It can be accessed in a range of ways, including via eye gaze, touch, a switch or a pointer.

According to Smartbox, Lumin-i is one of the best eye-trackers available for outdoor use.

High-powered infrared emitters facilitate reliable and steady eye tracking, even in bright conditions. Paired with an anti-glare coating on the Grid Pad Display, Lumin-i enables consistent gaze access in any environment, making it a versatile choice for people with communication impairments.

Dougal Hawes, Managing Director of Smartbox, commented: “This collaboration with Smart Eye was born out of our desire to bring the world’s best eye tracking performance to our sector, giving people a highly accurate eye tracker that will work both indoors and outdoors.”
