Innova Care Concepts Interlude 500 bariatric bed image

Innova Care Concepts has partnered with Canadian manufacturer Rotec International to launch the Interlude 500 bariatric bed, which Innova Care Concepts says is the only bed in the UK with a load capacity of 500kg and up to 21cm from the ground.

The low-profile bed reduces the risk of falls while making it easier for special needs patients to enter and exit the bed, improving their autonomy. It is also equipped with an integrated scale and a bed exit detection system to benefit both nurses and users.

Additionally, Innova Care Concepts says that the Interlude 500 adapts to individual patient needs as well as matches the weight capabilities of overhead hoist systems to aid with moving and handling.

Joe Hulbert, Sales Director for Innova Care Concepts, said: “We are always looking for the latest innovations in healthcare. Currently, in hospitals and care settings the demand for bariatric equipment is ever increasing with more and more pressure placed on care givers to support a wider range of bariatric patients. We are very pleased to begin our partnership with Rotec International.

“The Interlude 500 is an advancement in bariatric care, with its industry-leading features like extra low patient positioning, which can significantly reduce the risk of injuries in case of falling out of the bed and compatibility with a 500kg overhead hoist lift.”

Caring for bariatric patients is a growing necessary challenge for today’s healthcare providers, the equipment provider says, with recent NHS Digital figures showing that there were just over one million hospital admissions where obesity was a factor in 2019/20.

This is especially so in the hospital environment, where the increasing population of larger patients places considerable pressure on available resources and often requires the help of additional staff to ensure care tasks are completed but without appropriate equipment.  This can place caregivers and patients at increased risk of injury as well as impact in recovery.

These challenges can be addressed by providing caregivers with the right bariatric equipment like the Interlude 500, Innova Care Concepts says.

The low-profile bed features easily expandable options to accommodate different mattresses, emergency battery backup, quick connect components to ensure optimum efficiency on busy wards, remote control with built in nurse call, and an antimicrobial easy-to-clean powder coated steel structure.

Richard Harris, Sales Director for Rotec International, commented: “When caring for patients of size in an acute care setting, one of the greatest challenges is to ensure that the patient is treated like any other patient – with the dignity and respect they deserve, giving patients a greater sense of self-sufficiency.

“The Interlude 500 offers caregivers the ability to maintain dignity for patients of size, by providing a care setting with a bed designed to resemble a standard hospital bed.  Variable range of widths and lengths to provide flexibility to accommodate an extensive range of patients sizes.”
