Precision Rehab Lily case study image

Powerchair specialist Precision Rehab recently delivered a Paravan Piccolino powerchair to 4-year-old Lily who has Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) type 2.  This particular Piccolinio powerchair is unique as is it is the first one in the world to be fitted with the new Paravan K110 small seat system.

The K110 seat has a starting width and depth of 24cm and has been designed to accommodate very young and small first-time powerchair users that would normally require modifications including side supports and upper body supports to ensure they are comfortable and have adequate postural support.

Lily had outgrown her Wizzybug and parents Tamara and Nick knew she needed a new powerchair.

Tamara explained: “We began following some people with SMA on social media in the hopes of finding out which brand of powerchair they used or recommended and this was where we first discovered Precision Rehab after watching a clip of Matt delivering a powerchair to Tilly Griffith.

“I had a look at Precision Rehab’s website and found they had the exact powerchair we had been looking for – the Piccolino, as it had the seat lift and tilt in space along with many other brilliant features which we knew would really benefit Lily.

“During the first assessment we had concerns that the standard Piccolino seat size would be an issue as Lily is so small.  However, Matt immediately put our minds at rest by explaining there are various bespoke options that would work for her. Some months later at the point of ordering, Matt explained that the modifications would now not be necessary as Paravan had developed the new smaller seat and Lily would be the first child in the world to have a K110 seat fitted to her new chair which was amazing.”

Nick commented: “The difference Lily’s new chair has made is amazing.  For example, Lily had never been able to sit up on her own but she can now recline or sit up independently making daily activities most people take for granted such as sitting up at the table for family meals or talking to people face to face much easier thanks to the various functions on her Piccolino.

“We have not had many days out due to Covid19 but just being able to hold Lily’s hand on a walk instead of pushing her chair is so rewarding as I am sure any parent would agree.”

The family live close to Bird World which Lily has always loved visiting but many of the exhibits have a wooden base with windows from which visitors can view the birds. In the past, Nick or Tamara would have to lift Lily so she could see the birds but now she just uses the rise function and she can see everything.

“We are delighted that Matt and the team at Precision Rehab have successfully delivered the world’s first K110 small seat system,” said Stefan Ludwig, Paravan’s Director of Wheelchair Systems and Medical Products. “Here at Paravan we are continually investing in research and development and the K110 is just the latest addition to our ever-growing range of powerchairs and accessories and to see what a difference it has made to Lily and her family is incredibly rewarding for everyone here at Paravan.”

“I would like to say a huge thank you to Matt and everyone at Precision Rehab as from our first conversation through to assessments and multiple visits including a meeting with wheelchair services and Lily’s physio so they could see the chair for themselves nothing was ever a problem.  I would not hesitate in recommending Precision Rehab to anyone looking for a powerchair.”

The Precision Rehab ethos is that the chair should fit the person as opposed to the person fitting the chair and the new K110 seat system from Paravan has proved this to be the case.

Matt knew he could modify the existing seat to fit Lily but having a seat system which would provide the support Lily required without additional modifications was great news.

Matt James, Director of Precision Rehab, concluded: “We always strive to provide our clients with the best possible powerchair solution and hearing how happy Lily and her parents are makes all the hard work worthwhile.  We wish Lily many years of fun in her Piccolino.”

The Piccolino is also available with a standard K120 seat with dimension of 270mm to 430mm wide, 320mm to 385mm depth and a back height of 400mm to 480mm.

Additional features include seat slide, side supports, head support and other seat accessories, all of which are multi-variable and individually adjustable to make the Piccolino a truly versatile powerchair, which can meet the needs of all powerchair users with varying levels of mobility and independence.
