Council hosts event to showcase how assistive tech can help residents live independently at home
Kirklees Council and outsourced community equipment service provider Medequip UK are hosting a free event this Friday that will show residents how assistive technologies, equipment, and home adaptations can help them live more independently at home.
People can try out to try out items on display, including kitchen aids like jar openers and tap turners, as well as personal care items such as cream applicators and eye dropper dispensers.
The event will take place outside the Huddersfield Library Hub on 8 November 2024 from 9.30am to 3.30pm.
Councillor Beverley Addy, Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care and Health, said: “I know how a change in circumstances, due to a health condition or injury, can mean even simple tasks can become challenging and what a knock-on effect that can have in your life in general.
“When this happens, however, it isn’t necessary, to just struggle on. I’m proud to say, the council has a great team that can help you find the right support to regain your independence.
“By organising this event we hope to show people what help is available so they can regain their confidence, reduce anxiety, and continue to live life on their terms. I encourage people to come along and see what support they can access for themselves or a loved one. Kirklees Council is committed to enabling people to enjoy living independently for as long as possible and through this event we hope to do just that.”
Attendees will also have the opportunity to speak to occupational therapists (OTs); learn how to access support services; and explore equipment, adaptations, or therapy interventions designed to help them maintain their independence at home for longer.
OTs support residents who might struggle with day-to-day tasks like self-care, household chores, or getting out and about. They take a holistic approach to help maximise a person’s strengths so they can remain independent and continue to carry out everyday tasks with confidence. OTs also often recommend assistive technologies to help people remain as independent as possible.
Alex Roberts, Retail and Engagement Manager for Medequip, added: “Medequip are thrilled to be supporting Kirklees Council during Occupational Therapy Week 2024. Occupational therapists play a vital role in enabling people to live independently and safely, and we are proud to collaborate in highlighting the importance of their work.
“Medequip is committed to supporting occupational therapy professionals by providing high-quality equipment and services that promote independence, and this partnership allows us to showcase how our solutions contribute to the health and wellbeing of individuals in the community.
“Together with Kirklees Council, we are working to raise awareness, share best practices, and offer practical demonstrations of the latest innovations in daily living aids and equipment.”
Earlier this year, Kirklees Council announced that it will be modernising some of its day care facilities in 2025 for adults with learning disabilities by incorporating interactive assistive technology.
