CareFlex announce the winner of their OT Show competition, where all Healthcare Professionals who registered on the CareFlex stand were entered into a draw to win a SmartSeatPro, Level 4 chair. The winner was Phillipa Shaw, an Occupational Therapist at Daniel Yorath House (DYH), who was able to nominate a person of her choice to receive the chair.

Phillipa nominated Ian Brodie, a 52 year old gentleman who sustained a brain injury during an assault in 2013, to receive the SmartSeatPro chair. The assault left Ian wheelchair dependent and subsequently, seating and pressure relief are of high importance for him.

As Ian’s Occupational Therapist at DYH, Phillipa Shaw has been researching specialist seating options for him since his admission in October. Upon winning the Careflex Smart Seat Pro, Phillipa instantly thought of Ian and the genuine difference it could make to his quality of life.

The unique SmartSeatPro has a multi-adjustable back with three upper back-rest components which can be altered in height, depth, angle, offset and rotation, to suit a user’s needs. Each upper element includes built-in adjustable wings which can be individually positioned to contour the seat back to the user’s shape.

When asked about her professional opinion on the importance of correct seating, Phillipa said: “Achieving a good posture is vital for health and wellbeing. From an occupational therapy perspective, correct seating and posture is a fundamental requirement for increasing independence and engagement in activities.”

CareFlex Sales Manager Robin Wade commented: “The chair will enable him to spend more time out of bed and to interact more with the people in the unit. Once Ian has completed his rehabilitation, the chair will go on to help many more patients for many years and will become an invaluable asset to the trust.”

Opened in 1992 and situated close to Leeds, DYH is a specialist neuro-behavioural rehabilitation centre for people with an acquired brain injury; specialising in the assessment and rehabilitation of people with an acquired brain injury and complex needs.
