Throughout their 69 year history, the NRS Healthcare team have been supporting the physical needs of older people by offering innovative equipment to help them lead an independent life. Now, the award-winning company is backing The Silver Line charity in their latest campaign to care for the mental wellbeing of older adults and help flag the issue of loneliness many feel on a daily basis.

Phone friends#SilverWeek2016 will run from 15th – 21st May with an aim to not only raise awareness of loneliness in the older generations but also to recruit a number of volunteers from across the UK, encouraging them to become a Telephone Friend for The Silver Line.

Volunteering as a Telephone Friend requires one 30 minute phone call to the same person every week on a specified day – a small amount of time which can make a huge difference to the mindset of someone who needs to hear a friendly voice.

NRS Healthcare plans to support this initiative by releasing a number of animated gifs on their Twitter account throughout #SilverWeek2016, encouraging viewers to find out more about becoming a Telephone Friend. They will also promote a sharable image on their Facebook and Pinterest platforms entitled “Seven Steps to Silver Line Success!” This will give a visual journey of how to apply to join the Telephone Friends scheme and also link to a blog detailing the benefits of doing so – with advice from a real life volunteer, as well as quotes from The Silver Line’s Head of Communications, Kevin Mochrie.

“We’ve gone to great lengths to support The Silver Line’s campaign and ensure #SilverWeek2016 gets the exposure it deserves online,” explains Digital Content Manager, Lexi Lomas.

“It’s been a wonderful experience to talk to the volunteers and staff at The Silver Line about the fabulous work they do and gain a better understanding of what they want to achieve going forward.

“We feel a close affinity with The Silver Line charity as they appreciate that just because an older person feels lonely doesn’t make them less important within society – just as we recognise how an older person who may be less able-bodied can still be independent and contribute valuably. It’s all about perceptions and helping to change views of the way we see those more senior.”

The Silver Line is on course to take its 1 millionth call later this year – an incredible achievement considering it only launched in 2013 – and highlights the importance of the work the charity carries out. NRS Healthcare are confident their efforts towards #SilverWeek2016 will help raise awareness of the link between loneliness and aging, whilst hopefully contributing to more people signing up for the Telephone Friends scheme at The Silver Line.
