Specialist bariatric range to provide holistic approach to plus-size pressure care management

MediSmart Technologies has launched a new specialist bariatric pressure-relieving range, offering what it describes as a holistic approach to plus-size pressure care management.

The new bariatric range includes dynamic air mattresses, integrated hybrids, embedded hybrids, seating options, and the “revolutionary” ultra-low Microcell Companion air mattress that can be retrofitted onto riser recliners.

Clients can choose from standard sizes as well as bespoke options.

David Beavis, Sales Director at MediSmart Technologies, told AT Today that the new range addresses the issue of ‘one size not fitting all’ and ensures a holistic approach for plus-size pressure care management.

He added: “Whether plus-sized patients are in a bed or sitting out in a chair, the bariatric range highlights the importance of selecting the right surface for the right individual in the right clinical setting.”

The new range comprises of five pressure-relieving systems, including for beds, riser recliners and wheelchairs.

The Bariatric G4 Integrated Hybrid Mattress System with automatic pump combines foam and air, which is used by the integrated hybrid mattress design. Used for beds, the mattress allows for broader clinical application up to very high-risk level. It has a user weight limit of 60 stone and features an electronic pressure sensing control.

In terms of infection control, the G4 mattress has an integrated air hose cover, which is wipeable and machine-washable. For cleaning, MediSmart recommends 1,000 ppm diluted or 0.1% Hypochlorite solution (or to be used in conjunction with local infection control guidelines).

Furthermore, the G4 bariatric mattress includes integrated carry handles for easy transportation and storage, and has low- and high-pressure settings. It features MediSmart’s unique, patented air-cell design, which prevents air cell twisting.

Adding to the specialist bariatric range is the Bariatric G2 Embedded Bariatric Hybrid Mattress System with automatic pump. Also designed for easy profiling when used with profiling bed frames, this foam-on-cell mattress system has a user weight limit of 60 stone.

Building on MediSmart’s popular MicroCell Companion ultra-low profile alternating support surface to retrofit onto rise & recline chairs and day chairs, the company has now launched three bariatric versions of these mattresses.

The Bariatric MicroCell Companion Mattress comes in three different sizes: full size – 1800mm length, two-thirds size – 1200mm length, and one-third size – 600mm length. The one-third size option also fits onto wheelchairs, alongside riser recliners and day chairs.

Each of the bariatric MicroCell Companion mattresses can be retrofitted onto a range of rise & recline chairs and allow for broader clinical application up to very high-risk level.

Furthermore, for infection control, the mattresses have wipeable hard-wearing base covers, with vapour-permeable base covers available as an option. The air hose sleeves are both wipeable and machine washable. MediSmart recommends 1,000 ppm diluted or 0.1% Hypochlorite solution (or to be used in conjunction with local infection control guidelines) to clean all of the MicroCell Companion Bariatric Mattresses.
