Sponsored walk during Leeds Learning Disability Week 2017

Commencing on the 18th June, the annual Leeds Learning Disability Week will see local organisations come together to host a variety of activities which raise awareness of people with learning disabilities.

Learning Disability Week is a national campaign and an opportunity to support families and individuals.  As every year, Leeds will host a number of events, from sports and dancing to crafts and upcycled fashion.

In addition, charity Leeds Mencap will also be encouraging family, friends and colleagues to get involved throughout the week by taking part in the ‘Wear a Cap for Leeds Mencap’ campaign. The charity is asking people to wear a cap or a hat for a full day and donate a small amount of money.

Cath Lee, Chief Executive at Leeds Mencap, said: “This year, together with our partners, we want to increase awareness of Leeds Learning Disability Week, encouraging corporates, families and individuals to get involved and show their support.”

A Community Task Group works in partnership with the Learning Disability Week to run a co-ordinated programme of activities throughout the week with members of the Group including Aspire Community Benefit Society, Leeds City College and People Matters.

Cath continued: “Learning disabilities affect over 15,000 people in the Leeds area, and we want to provide support for as many people as possible.”
