Kidz to Adultz exhibitions image

Healthcare professionals will have the chance to access nine free CPD-accredited seminars at the upcoming Kidz to Adultz Scotland across a wide range of assistive technology topics.

From sessions about flying with disabilities, therapeutic seating for children, and early powered mobility, Kidz Scotland is a great chance for professionals to boost their CPD.

Organised by Disabled Living, the regional and one-day Kidz to Adultz exhibitions are dedicated to children with disabilities and special needs, their parents, carers, and professionals who support them. It is a chance for attendees to view the latest paediatric equipment, gain insightful CPD knowledge, and network.

The upcoming Kidz Scotland show takes place on Thursday 8 September from 9.30am-4.30pm at the Royal Highland Centre in Edinburgh.

Alongside the exhibition, healthcare professionals can advance their assistive technology knowledge with a broad range of free CPD-accredited sessions delivered by sector experts.

Below are the CPD seminars that discuss the key role of assistive technologies to improve health outcomes.

The first seminar, ‘Fitness and fun: Meeting the new activity guidelines for children with disabilities – how can we rise to this challenge?’, will take place at 10am in Room 2.

Delivered by Kayleah Cooper, National Clinical Training Manager Qualified Physiotherapist for Jiraffe, the session will provide current knowledge to support evidence-based justification for the clinical use of adaptive tricycles in light of new physical activities for disabled children.

At 11am in Room 2, Dr Laura Finney, Clinical & Marketing Director at Leckey, will discuss ‘Paediatric seating: Do we have to choose posture over function for the complex client?’ She will explore how to set up paediatric seating to best suit clinical needs, touching on how clinicians can prioritise between competing goals of posture and function for complex clients.

‘The power of early powered mobility’ is another CPD seminar that healthcare professionals may be keen to attend. It will take place 12pm in Room 2 and be delivered by Kate El Bizanti, Occupational Therapist, Bugzi Loan Scheme, MERU. By attending this session, professionals will understand the benefits of early powered mobility, and how to access a powered mobility scheme in rural and sparsely populated areas.

Adam Ferry, Director of the OT Service (in association with Abacus Specialist Bathroom Solutions), is presenting a session at 1pm in Room 2. ‘Managing bathing posture to support engagement and safety’ will cover the theory behind bathing posture, linked to functional engagement, safety, and long-term health and well-being. A practical demonstration of products will be used to reinforce this learning.

Also running at 1pm but in Room 1 is the seminar ‘Paediatric therapeutic seating & its benefits’. Martina Tierney, Occupational Therapist & Clinical Director of Seating Matters, will discuss the Importance and impact of an effective seating assessment.

At 3pm in Room 1, Graeme Innes, Assistive Technology Team Lead for Smartbox, will present ‘Communicating without speech’. The session’s goal is to raise awareness of strategies and approaches to delivering augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) success.
